"The more our world functions like the natural world, the more likely we are to endure on this home that is ours, but not ours alone."

Biologist at the Design Table Workshop (12:00PM)
Biologist at the Design Table
Would you like to use your biology degree to help people from the fields of design, business, architecture, and engineering to create a sustainable world?
Join Janine Benyus, author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, and Dayna Baumeister, PhD biologist, for an eye-opening, five and a half day intensive course to train biologists interested in applying biomimicry to design.
Course content:
What you'll learn:
- How to apply the biomimicry tool
- Examples of biomimetic success stories
- How biological knowledge inspires the design of new products, processes, systems
- How to facilitate bio-inspired design
What you'll do:
- Solve design challenges by asking "what would nature do here?"
- Build brainstorming and team work skills by working with other biologists
- Become acquainted with life's inherently sustainable design principles
- Learn how to translate biological knowledge for non-technical audiences
- Practice with engineers, designers, architects, business people and managers
What you'll take home:
- A sense of possibility, because sustainable models already exist...right outside!
- A proven method for bringing nature's ideas to the design table
- Tools and expert contacts for further explorations
- A whole new way of viewing and valuing the natural and built world
Workshop logistics:
Participants:
Biologists, ecologists, and naturalists with a passion for the natural world, an understanding of sustainability and an interest in applying nature's elegant design strategies to human challenges.
Workshop dates:
Summer 2008: May 30-June 6. The course begins with dinner on the 30th and ends after breakfast on the 6th.
Workshop location:
The breathtaking Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR) in Dupuyer, Montana. Visit the TRMR website at: http://www.boone-crockett.org/conservation/conservation_trmr.asp?area=conservation&ID=4E754E1B&se=1
Workshop costs:
To be determined. Registration includes tuition, materials, room and board for the five-day course and transportation to and from the Great Falls airport. Some partial scholarships available.
Application:
This rigorous course requires a broad understanding of biology, an interdisciplinary mindset, and an ability to research and translate biological concepts for a non-technical audience. Our application process is designed to ensure that the training and your background and skill set are a good fit.
This course follows our first course in Palo Alto, CA in January 2004, our second course in Raleigh, NC in May 2005, and our third and fourth courses at this ranch in July 2006 and May 2007. Several biologists found applicable biomimetic work following the course.
